CHAPTER 13

Deluxe pulled into the parking lot of the Swanson Funeral Home on East Grand Blvd. three days later looking for anything or anyone that might seem a little out of place or the least bit suspicious. He figured that today of all days, Gator would be the most vulnerable to a set up. Mylani’s funeral was the biggest news of the city, and up until now, no one was able to hit Gator where it would hurt the most.

After seeing that the parking lot was clear, Deluxe ensured that his Glock was tucked away securely on his side. He hoped that today of all days he wouldn’t have to let his trusted friend sing to anyone, but with the streets being the way they were, he wasn’t going to take any chances. Looking around one last time, he decided to go inside the funeral home and spend a few minutes alone with Mylani before the service. A service that would not include any singing or a trip to the cemetery. Gator had made it very clear that he didn’t want to see his girl put in the ground, so that part was scheduled to be done privately.

When Deluxe walked inside the cool building, the owner, Mr. Baker, took him to the room where the service was going to be held. This was the first time that Deluxe had stepped inside of a funeral home since his father was murdered. He didn’t like the coldness, the quietness, or the stench of death that filled the air and clogged his nose.

Deluxe walked down the isle that led to the high quality $4000.00 solid mahogany casket that Momma Ruth hand picked. Even though Gator was unable to participate in any of the funeral arrangements, he made sure that Momma Ruth chose the best accommodations for his girl. As Deluxe drew closer to the casket, he looked at the numerous flower bouquets and thought about how Mylani didn’t deserve the vicious and monstrous death she’d endured, and all because of who her fiancé was. Finally standing next to the casket, Deluxe bent down and kissed her on the forehead. Despite her lifeless features, Mylani was still beautiful, especially in her favorite cream silk Marc Jacobs dress. Touching her cold stiff hand, he eyed the beautiful engagement ring that his uncle had given to her years ago and quietly began to sob. Deluxe told her how sorry he was that she had to pay for the sins of his uncle, and that he would do whatever it took to make everyone pay who was involved with her murder.

As Deluxe tried to get himself together before the crowd came, he remembered that his uncle had taught him that crying was for the weak, and that real g’s didn’t shed tears, especially in the public eye. Deluxe pulled a handkerchief out of his suit pocket and wiped away the tears that were freely falling down his stressed face. The funeral was scheduled to start soon and now more than ever he needed to be on his ‘A’ game.
